Mentalization-Based Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder
Dawn Bales, Joost Hutsebaut, Patrick Luyten, and Roel Verheul
Mentalization-based Treatment is an evidence-based treatment approach, originally developed and investigated for adults with (severe) Borderline Personality Disorder by Anthony Bateman and Peter Fonagy in the U.K. The Dutch MBT research consortium coordinates different research lines at the MBT-unit of De Viersprong. First, there is the original naturalistic study, replicating and fine-tuning the original results of Bateman and Fonagy on (cost-)effectiveness with a follow-up of 5 years. Second, in a recently started randomized controlled trial different dosages of MBT are compared in terms of their (cost)effectiveness for different subgroups of patients. Third, pilot studies are conducted regarding newly treated patient groups, like adolescents, parents and families.
